I can't keep falling forever

learnin' to fly

"I can't keep falling forever" ? ?

It was one of Ki's first LJ icons in 2005, she designed some or all of it, Lois told me. Maybe she would soar under or above, or on, this bridge:

It's by the Dutch photographer Thijs Tuurenhout and it was on exhibit in Delft in the gallery at the Vermeer Museum when I photographed his print. Loved the disappearance of the farther end and the spectral images of the passersby in the fog... of which there is plenty in Holland... just as there is here on campus. This pedestrian bridge is a real one.

Soyeah.

April 13th, here and gone. April 18th, here and gone. 2008, here and remembered, also gone.

I <3 this contrail left by a jetliner flying high above Holland somewhere, westward into the sunset. Toward America, maybe. Away from both The Netherlands and Israel. A passenger, if she goes far enough, could move herself across the ocean all the way to Seattle. Then, down to Olympia and Evergreen.

The contrail is here and gone, too... the high winds will quickly disperse it, they will eat it.

Ki was not quite six months old in the West Bank when this song appeared in America:

"Free Fallin', now I'm free fallin'
I wanna write her name in the sky
I'm gonna free fall out into nothin',
Gonna leave this world for awhile..."
And these words from 1991, she was two:

"Well some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I've started out for God knows where
I guess I'll know when I get there;
I'm Learnin' To Fly, but I ain't got wings
Coming down
is the hardest thing...
Into the Great Wide Open
Under them skies of blue
Out in the great wide open
A rebel without a clue..."

You don't have to be a Tom Petty fan to appreciate the words and their music. But I certainly am... years before Ki would speed through my life in thirty months. Plus that last week. And now I'm amazed at the parallels, the resonances that these words have with her life path.

Then Ki walked on that bridge and found out where it ended.

She found out IF it ended.

What is NOT gone, like contrail vapour, is what she left us in cyberspace and what she goes on leaving to each of us if we wish to embrace her in our hearts.

There is such a thing as falling upwards, too.

Except to us on the ground that doesn't look like falling at all.

And it isn't.
